Whose Side is Charles Widmore On?

by Christina Gleason on March 19, 2010

Charles Widmore. The man sent a team of mercenaries to the island to capture Benjamin Linus and kill everyone else. The head of his team, Keamy, executed Ben’s teenage daughter Alex. He told (the real, still alive) John Locke that a war was coming to the island. But whose side is Widmore on?

Last season, it seemed as if the war was between two rivals: Ben and Charles. Both men wanted supremacy of the island. Both men claimed to want to protect the island. Both can’t be right.

But this final season of LOST, it’s turning up that there are bigger stakes here than a simple mortal rivalry. No, the war is really between Jacob and the Man in Black, aka Smokey the Smoke Monster. Black vs. White. Good vs. Evil.

Except that the black and white thing is colored in more shades of gray. There’s no doubt in my mind that Smokey is, indeed, evil. He has moments of humanity, though. And Jacob is hardly the image of perfection and benevolence. His gifts have a lot of catches. He gave Richard eternal youth, but the poor man’s been  on the hook for centuries. He allowed Dogen’s son to live, but brought Dogen to the island so he could never see him again.

Is Widmore working for Jacob or Smokey? It’s funny, because Ben was working for Jacob and never saw him… but he’s obviously been influenced by Smokey at the same time, likely even before Smokey appeared as the resurrected John Locke.

In “Recon,” Sawyer planned on double crossing both Locke (Smokey) and Widmore, getting them to duel it out so he and Kate can sneak off the island in the submarine. But what if Smokey and Locke are actually working together? What if they’re on the same side?

But there’s always the possibility that Widmore is allied with Ilana and her people. I think it’s unlikely at this point, but since when has “unlikely” ever stopped LOST? So many improbable things have happened. I wouldn’t be surprised if this were the case.

Whose side do you think Widmore is on? Do you think we’ll find out when we get to see what (or who) is inside that padlocked room on the sub?
