Jacob and Smokey as Immature Gods – An Allegory

by Christina Gleason on February 24, 2010

I’d like to thank Oh Amanda from The Disney Blog for the idea that Jacob and Smokey are immature gods. As I put it in her comments section, that’s not just poetic, but I think it’s quite appropriate.

And I wanted to expand on that.

The Island is an Allegory for How We See God

I need to preface this section with a bit about myself. I consider myself a Christian. I was raised in a Reformed, Presbyterian church where I went to Sunday School dutifully every week. But events at my church led to my disillusionment with organized religion and a lack of faith in our supposedly holy religious leaders. My belief in Christianity is currently based more in the actual teachings of Christ – love, compassion, tolerance – and I’ve actually come to believe that other world religions are really just each ancient culture’s way of trying to understand the greater mysteries of life.

But I digress.

Jacob is our God figure in the Judeo-Christian framework. Smokey (the Man in Black) is our Satan figure in this allegory.

Jacob believes in free will, although he seems to have tipped the scales – word choice intentional, because of the cave Smokey showed Sawyer – in his favor by taking a direct hand in the lives of our castaways. He believes that people will make the right decisions… eventually. It’s worth giving them a chance.

Smokey sees nothing but destruction where people are involved. And because he doesn’t care about what actually happens to them, he tempts them to help him escape his prison by giving them the answers to the questions that have been plaguing them.

Many people of faith will scream into the wind, asking God, “WHY?” Why is this happening to me? Why would you do this? Why would you allow this to happen? He doesn’t answer.

And, some would say, that is where Satan comes in. Whispering to us, tempting us with easy answers, easy solutions that make us feel better at the time.

Is this not what is happening on the island? Jacob asks his people to have faith in him. Hurley does. Locke thought he did, although Locke was really Smokey’s pawn the whole time. But Jacob isn’t giving any answers, and even Hurley is starting to get frustrated with that. Will he lose his faith?

Smokey, on the other hand, is willing to tell anyone who will follow him everything he knows. He promised Sawyer the truth. Was it the truth? The whole truth? I doubt it.

Let’s not forget Dr. Faustus and his deal with the devil in exchange for the knowledge he craved.

So the answers are not forthcoming from Jacob. That doesn’t mean he’s bad… just short-sighted when it comes to dealing with mere mortals. He wants faith, but the castaways need more than that. That’s where Smokey comes in, offering what people want most in order to get them to aid him in… whatever diabolical plot he’s got going on.

There have always been religious overtones in LOST. I think we’re just getting it beaten over our heads in this final season that this is what it’s really been all about all along.

Blogging While Watching LOST: The Incident – Part 1

by Christina Gleason on May 13, 2009

A spinning wheel. Ancient Egyptian surroundings? A fish trap. Are we going to see the whole statue here? Oh wait… The Black Rock? These gents  speak English, so it’s not ancient times. They’re getting awfully philosophical here. JACOB!

The blond guy is Jacob! And we DID see the statue. It looked like Anubis… but the snout looked more like that of a crocodile.

Badly CGI-ed sub surfacing! Juliet was with Kate on this whole rescue mission… VINCENT! Rose! Bernard with a beard  like Noah! Ooh look, a rainbow! Rose and Bernard are retired. LOL.

So we still don’t know what’s in “the damn box.” “We’re the good guys,” he says. Dude, is that Jacob’s cabin? The ash circle has been broken.

Jacob came to see… Ilana? They’re on a first name basis. She looked like she had some pretty severe facial burns… they’re healed because of Jacob? He asked for her help.

Someone else has been using the cabin, so she’s burning it. She saved the weaving on the wall.

Kids in Iowa. Shoplifting a lunch box from the general store. New Kids on the Block. LOL. Little Katie Austen. Umm… Jacob is paying for the stolen lunch box? WTH? “You’re not going to steal anymore, are you? Be good, Katie.”

DHARMA sub time. Sayid knows it’s a 20-ton bomb. Faraday’s journal details how to dismantle the bomb… and detonate the plutonium. Eloise is pregnant… so poor Daniel never had a chance at sanity. He was a radioactive fetus.

Radzinski came to the island to change the world. So he’s going to keep drilling.

Richard is looking at John like he’s crazy. “Ben told me that he strangled you… How are you alive?”

“I’ve never seen anyone come back to life.”
“And I’ve never seen anyone who didn’t age.”

Jacob is the reason that Richard doesn’t age. And Jacob is likely the reasson why John Locke is alive again.

Crazy Ajira people on the outrigger. Frank may be a candidate. He’d like to know what he’s a candidate for, and I think we’d all like to know the answer as well. What’s in the box? Of course. We’re not going to see until after the commercial break. But Lapidus thinks it’s “terrific.”

A church. A funeral. Who is the little boy? Sawyer? Was that two coffins in two hearses? Jacob gives him the pen to write the letter. Dear Mr. Sawyer. “What’s done is done.” He broke his promise about not finishing the letter.

Nice one, Juliet! Taking out the sedative peddler. Is she going to commandeer the sub herself? Oh okay, just getting the skipper to surface. (Yeah, I know some submarine lingo. What’s it to you?)

Sayid, buddy… those gloves aren’t going to help protect you from the plutonium inside the warhead.

Wait, Jack is the one who told Richard to never give up on Locke? Huh. Never thought I’d see the day when I heard those words come out of his mouth.

Locke is going to make Ben kill Jacob. Much like Ben tried to make Locke kill Cooper. Except that Locke found an alternative…. he got Sawyer to do it instead.

Does Locke really expect Ben to kill Jacob, or is it just a test? I don’t know if Ben ever really expected for Locke to kill Cooper. I think he was just testing him… he never thought he would do it. He was right, but only in the letter, not the spirit.

Oh my God! We just saw Nadia killed! Jacob stopped Sayid from crossing the street with her. Nadia told Sayid to take her home, which is why he took her body back to Iraq.

Richard pistol whipped Eloise to protect their leader. Eloise was their leader? Or Widmore?

Roger just shot Sayid in the gut! Jack is a pretty good shot with a pistol. No, Sayid can’t die! Maybe it’s not as bad as it looks. I don’t want Sayid to be the one to die. Hurley and that DHARMA van to the rescue… and not for the first time. Or second even.

Everything that Rises Must Converge. Jacob was sitting on a bench when Cooper through Locke out the window. I recongized the building. Did you? OMG, Locke actually died when he fell out the window. Jacob brought him back to life!

“Mind if I ask you a question?”
“I’m a Pisces.”

LOL.

“So yes, I lied. That’s what I do.”

Sun found Aaron’s cradle… and Charlie’s ring. She’s been an afterthought nearly this entire season. Jacob was a guest at Sun and Jin’s wedding. He gave them a blessing.

“Who was that man?”
“I don’t know… but his Korean was excellent.”

Bring on Part 2!

Amazing Theory: Jacob’s Kin

August 4, 2008

If you’re looking for some heavy reading during this seemingly endless hiatus, take a look at the theory Jacob’s Kin, written by Garden Mom at MyMedia.
It’s a very long theory, but well thought out and researched. It’s heavy on the Biblical history of Jacob. (It’s easier reading if you’re familiar with the Andrew [...]

Jacob is Him – But who is Jacob? Spirit? Telepath? Prisoner?

May 11, 2007

“God loves you as he loved Jacob.”
That was one of the frames on the screen Karl was forced to watch in Room 23.
Jacob also had a list, and Jack was not on it. There has been much speculation about Jacob since he was first mentioned on LOST. There was speculation about him even [...]

Ben Linus – Liar, Manipulator, and Cold-Blooded Killer

May 10, 2007

After seeing the carnage of the orchestrated gas attack, it’s hard to see how Ben can possibly think that his group is really made up of the “good guys” he claims they are. The castaways versus Others fatality tally really doesn’t matter anymore. We know now that the Others brutally murdered a whole [...]

Just who is Jacob in the LOST universe?

November 12, 2006

Apparently, Jack wasn’t on Jacob’s list.
So who is this Jacob? And are we to assume that Jacob’s list was the one that Bea Klugh gave to Michael? And if Jack’s name wasn’t originally on that list, then what exactly is the point of keeping Kate and Sawyer in bear cages if Danny Pickett’s just going [...]
