Blogging While Watching LOST: The Candidate

by Christina Gleason on May 4, 2010

John Locke. In the hospital. Jack says, “Welcome back.”

“I know you.”

They were on the same flight. At baggage claim. Jack just did surgery. He wants to know how Locke got his spinal injury.

“I think you’re a candidate.” For a new type of surgery. Jack thinks he could fix him. Locke says, “No, thank you.”

There’s Helen, so happy to see him. She thanks Jack. “Thank you for saving him!”

The island.

Jack wakes up… in a boat. Sayid welcomes him to Hydra Island. “At least you didn’t have to paddle.” Oh yeah, that’s right.

Widmore’s camp. They want to throw the Losties in a cage. Sawyer doesn’t want to go back in the cage. Grabbed a gun. Widmore threatens to shoot Kate, says it doesn’t matter to him if she dies because her name is not on his list. Widmore says he’s putting them in the cage for their own good.

In L.A.

Bernard! He’s drilling on some form of dental cast? Jack wants John Locke’s dental records to find out why he was injured. Locke was in for emergency dental surgery three years ago. Bernard remembers sitting across the aisle from Jack on Oceanic Flight 815, said he was flirting with his wife Rose while he was in the bathroom.

Anthony Cooper was the other man in the accident that paralyzed Locke. Well, at least that part’s a constant.

The island.

Sayid explained about the mortar attack and how Locke saved Jack. “It’s just the three of us now.” Locke wants to go “rescue” Jack’s friends.

Jack says, “They’re not my people. And I’m not leaving the island.”

Locke wants Jack’s help convincing his friends to trust him. Why should Jack trust him? Because he could kill him and everyone else on the island at any time, but he hasn’t. Um… not a very good argument for trust there.

Sawyer: “Feel like we’re running in circles? Back int hese cages? Except last time, the gun was to my head.”

Sawyer explains that Kate’s name was in the cave, but it was crossed out. “He doesn’t need you.”

Jin tells Sun he saw the pictures of their daugther. Widmore had found her camera on the plane. Aww… his wedding ring! He’s finally wearing it again. And… the power went out. I guess that means the pylons aren’t working. And here comes Smokey…

Stupid guys…Didn’t Widmore tell you that guns don’t work against Smokey?

Kate is trying to reach the keys on the dead guy’s belt. Frank decides to kick the door open… But Jack gets there first, unlocks the cage door.

“What are you doing here?” Kate asks.

Jack acknowledges the mechanical sounds that Smokey is making off in the jungle. “I’m with him.”

Comforting.

Frank leads the pack through the jungle. Jack says he’s taking them to the plane, but he’s not getting on it. He’s not meant to go. Sawyer thanks Jack for coming back for them.

“Sayid’s with us. He’s the one who turned off the generators.”

In L.A.

Jack is trying to pay Anthony Cooper a visit at the nursing home. Helen is there. She wants Jack to leave this alone.

“You saved his life. Why can’t you let that be enough?”
“Because it’s not.”

Yikes. Cooper doesn’t look so hot. Helen hat to wipe drool off his face. Looks like he ended up in a vegetative state.

The island.

Again with the guns. Locke took a number of bullets before shooting the shooter. Took his watch. Now he’s on the Ajira plane. What is he looking for? He found something in an overhead compartment.

I see Frank, Sawyer, Jin, Sun, Hurley, Kate, Claire, and Sayid. What happened to Ben?

“If it’s any consolation, Widmore knew I would kill these men.” If he really wanted to keep him off the plane, he wouldn’t have moved the pylons.

There was C4 on the plane. Locke says Widmore was going to blow them all up once they were on the plane. They should take the submarine.

Sawyer asks Jack to make sure “that thing” doesn’t get on the sub when they get to the  dock. “Just get it to the water, and I’ll take care of the rest.” What’s your plan, James?

In L.A.

Jack is at Locke’s bedside. “I wish you had believed me.” Huh. Funny, that’s what he said in his suicide note.

There’s Claire. Jack offers her an Apollo Bar out of the vending machine. Good thing it didn’t get stuck, since Jacob wasn’t there to get it out.

Christian “especially” wanted Claire to have this wooden box. A music box? Is it the one that plays “Catch a Falling Star?” Yep.

At this point, Jack must be wondering if there’s anyone in his life who wasn’t on Oceanic Flight 815, since now he knows that Claire was on it, too. He offers to let Claire stay with him instead of at the motel. They’re not strangers; they’re family.

The island.

Tremulous music. The dock.

“Just ’cause there ain’t any goons on the dock doesn’t mean there ain’t any on the sides.” Sawyer has a plan that involves Jack and Locke watching their backs while Sawyer’s team moves in on the sub.

Sawyer orders the captain to fire the thing up.

Jack is now wearing the backpack full of C4.

Kate just got shot! Widmore’s people shot her. Jack brought her onboard the sub.

Can Smokey not transform when he’s wet? He was shooting Widmore’s people.

Sawyer left Claire behind because Locke was heading their way. Claire starts screaming about them leaving without her. Locke tells her not to worry. She doesn’t want to be on that sub. Why? Because he handed Jack the bomb, and it’s got four minutes left until it detonates.

“Dude, where’d that come from?” Hurley wants to know.
“Locke,” says Jack, aka Captain Obvious. “We did exactly what he wanted.”

Yep. Because that line he gave you about Widmore wanting to get you onto a small, enclosed place so he could kill you all at once? He was conning you. That was his plan for getting you on the submarine. Stupid.

Jack screams about getting them to the surface. Um… Don’t submarines have jettisons? Instead of trying to disarm the bomb, why don’t you shoot it out a torpedo tube or something?

Jack insists that nothing’s going to happen because Locke can’t kill them. He doesn’t want anyone to touch the bomb because Locke can’t kill them… he wants them to kill each other instead.

Sawyer pulled a wire out, and now it’s counting down faster.

Dude! Sayid ran with the bomb so it wouldn’t explode among them. He wasn’t completely gone to the Dark Side. He still cared about them.

An alarm goes off, sounds like the Swan. A hatch blows out and hits Frank. Sun is pinned to the wall by something very, very heavy.

Jack tells Hurley to get Kate to the surface. Sawyer gets kncoked unconscious. Sun is still pinned. Jin won’t leave her. Jin tells Jack to take Sawyer and go. Jin will get Sun out. I think they’re going to die together. If Sun’s going to die, Jin wants to die with her.

Oh God. They’re gone.

In L.A.

Locke is leaving the hospital. Jin walked by him, carrying flowers. Jack wishes Locke goodbye.

Locke was in a plane crash. He had his private pilot’s license. Cooper was his first passenger. Locke said he could trust him. They barely got off the ground. It’s his fault his father can’t walk or talk… Jack and Locke have switched places. Island Jack blamed himself for everyone else’s problems. Alt Locke now does that. Island Locke was the one with the faith. Now Alt Jack is. They’re trying to help each other let go.

“I can help you, John. I wish you believed me.” Seems to tickle Locke’s brain.

The island.

Jack is dragging Sawyer onto the beach. Hurley has Kate. They’re the only four left.

Locke is there with Claire. “It sunk.”

“But they were all on it. They’re all dead?”
“Not all of them.”
“Where are you going?”
“To finish what I started.”

The part with Jin and Sun was heartbreaking. I kept thinking Jin should go so at least their daughter would have one parent! And Sayid seemed to overcome his inner “evil” to sacrfice himself. That part was redeeming in an odd way. . .

I’m a little scared about what’s to come. If they’re going to start killing folks off in multiples. . .gah! AND they’d better not leave me this confused at series end or I’ll. . .I’ll. . .be really, really mad and refuse to watch any and all reruns-LOL.
